Golden Tripod Award

Golden Tripod Award is an important award handed out by Shanghai Creative Industry Center. Mr. Giel Groothuis, director of Dutch Design Workspace (DDWS), is honoured to receive the Top Ten Leading Figure Award 2014!

Giel Groothuis is a Dutch registered architect working in both the Netherlands and China. After founding his own practice he moved to Shanghai in 2005 to pursue his passion for architecture and design in Asia. In collaboration with other firms he has won several design competitions, such as for a large athletic stadium in Shandong province. Giel was the Aesthetic Supervisor for the City of Rotterdam pavilion during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, and the Chief Architect for the Friendship Park Eindhoven that has been realized in the city of Nanjing.

 In 2010, Giel founded the Dutch Design Workspace, for which he got great support from the Dutch government as part of the unique public private partnership programme to promote Dutch design abroad. By establishing the incubator programme, Giel is able to combine his passion for design and architecture, his interest in emerging markets and his ambition to improve the business environment for the Dutch creative industry in China.

In the past years, Giel led DDWS working on creative industry incubation programme, assisting foreign creative companies with their start in the challenging Chinese market. He also has devoted his energy to promoting Dutch design within China. He has initiated and organized creative events and publications such as Dutch Design on the Move, a tour exhibition to promote the top design from Holland; Dutch Design in China, an annual publication, and Pecha Kucha Night Shanghai.

Mr. Giel Groothuis will continue to lead DDWS to bridge the gap between China and Netherlands through diverse cultural and creative programmes in the Chinese Year of Goat!

Dutch Design in China Book3 is Launched

Part of the incubation programme run by Dutch Design Workspace is a periodical publication presenting top designs from the Netherlands. We are thrilled to announce Dutch Design in China is launched this week! This is the third edition in the series.

This year again we present a selection of the leading design companies and studios that have set up a permanent base or have realized a project in China. Their disciplines range from product design, fashion, architecture to branding and advertising. Insightful interviews with Dutch designers active in China are also presented. Dutch Design in China provides a snapshot of Dutch design in a global context. We hope you will get inspired by this book.

Technical Support – Supplier Development // Taiwan & China

Koneksie focuses on solutions for social problems in emerging countries. We do this by developing new
and better products that are always part of comprehensive solutions. For the growing mobility needs in Kenya,
Koneksie is developing a motorcycle.

With the aim of starting mass production in 2015, Koneksie is currently searching for a mechanical
engineer to assist in the development of components with our suppliers in Asia. This person will be directly
related to the Sourcing and Product Development teams, playing a central-role on the communication
between our network in Asia and the headquarters in The Netherlands.

Activities Technical Support – Supplier Development

In the coming period, Koneksie will start the testing program of our motorcycle. During this phase we
will receive feedback of our current set of components. This information will be processed to our suppliers
for improvement.

A key-point to success in working with suppliers in Asia is to be able to communicate clearly our
request and the ability to understand their feedback. Adding a person with technical background to Koneksie
Asia network will ensure the request made by our team in NL is successfully transmitted to our suppliers. This
can be from the “cultural adaptation” of our requirements to the technical completion of the design
engineering work (technical suggestion of standards for finishing, tolerances, materials, etc).

Having a person on the ground to perform technical assignments will largely benefit the technical
sourcing activities, which include:

• Actively participate in the sourcing and product development activities, providing support to
the technical communication between Koneksie and its suppliers in Asia;
• Provide input on the components developed by our Product Development team prior to
bringing it to our suppliers;
• Assist in the development of OEM components in Taiwan and China. Making sure the request of
all specifications as well understood, examining one-off samples and production standards
• Address and solve operational issues with suppliers
• Identifying existing components that can suit our request with the support of our network
• Provide constructive feedback to Koneksie in the form of text, drawings or references;

Requirements for the position:

• Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or similar degree in relevant field
• Relevant experience in motorcycle/automotive industry
• Fluency in Mandarin or/and traditional Chinese language
• English proficiency is essential
• Skills in 3D Cad software are a plus (Solid Works, AutoCAD, UniGraphics, etc.)
• Availability to travel up to 50% of working time
• Strategic thinker and pragmatic worker
